Els Encantats above the Sant Maurici lake

The valley

Catalonia's only national park is twenty minutes away, the ski slopes half an hour, and some walks start right in the village.

Els Encantats above the Sant Maurici lake

Aigüestortes i Estany de Sant Maurici National Park

The park entrance is at Espot, twenty minutes by car from the house. From there you can walk up to the Sant Maurici lake in about an hour, or share one of the 4x4 taxis that run up all day. The twin peaks over the water are Els Encantats. Give it the whole day if you want to reach the refuges.

The base of the Espot ski area

Espot ski area

The same road that goes to the park ends at the ski area, twenty minutes away. It is a small station in the forest, the kind where children learn and nobody queues, and half a day on the snow goes a long way. You can leave your skis downstairs at the house.

The open bowls of Baqueira Beret

Baqueira Beret

The big one. More than 160 km of pistes, thirty-five minutes away over the Bonaigua pass. In midwinter the pass sometimes closes for a morning after heavy snow; the long way round through the Val d'Aran still gets you there. Easy to do there and back in a day.

A raft in the rapids of the Noguera Pallaresa

Rafting on the Noguera Pallaresa

The Noguera Pallaresa is the best-known whitewater river in the Pyrenees, and it runs right past the village. The rafting bases are in Llavorsí, twenty-five minutes down the road. The season follows the snowmelt, April to July, and the river is at its loudest in late spring.

The GR-11 and the valley paths

The GR-11, the path that crosses the Pyrenees from sea to sea, comes straight through Esterri. You do not have to walk to France: loops of two and three hours start in the village itself, through hay meadows and past old stone barns. Ask us at reception and we will point you to the right one for the day.

The courtyard of the Ecomuseu in Esterri

Esterri, the Ecomuseum and the Romanesque churches

Esterri itself is worth an unhurried hour: the old bridge over the Noguera, the lanes, the Ecomuseu in Casa Gassia showing how the valley lived a hundred years ago. The Romanesque churches of Isil and Son are ten minutes up the valley by car. It is the quiet kind of sightseeing.

Through the year

Winter

Snow at Espot and Baqueira.

Spring

Snowmelt fills the Noguera Pallaresa and the rafting season runs from April to July. The meadows turn green and there are still few visitors.

Summer

The high lakes and the GR-11. August fills up, so book a couple of months ahead.

Autumn

Mushroom season and the deer rut, with the beech woods yellow. It is the quietest time of year and when there is most game on the menu.
